My colleague Håkan pointed me last night to the Beta of Microsoft Security Essentials.
I’ve installed it and it’s now running on my machine.
 | To get it you first have to pass by the Microsoft Connect Gal in a form. I have no idea what that model got paid for putting her face on Microsoft Connect. Had she known she’d become the drooling object of every nerd ever signing up for a new beta of <anything> I’m sure she would have asked for more. |
Then you can download and install the product which is very straight forward. The program starts up and runs a check on your system.
Now what can I say about Microsoft Security Essentials? It’s kind of difficult to know really. It installs. Runs smoothly. Has an understandable UI and Settings. What else can I say? Not much. I have no idea if it really does anything. Security experts will have to attest to that.
One last thing I can say though that is positive; it hasn’t bothered me yet. It just is. Too many security programs have I tried that annoy you time and again with information that they’ve updated the virus database or what ever. Or that show a splash screen at startup that you cannot turn off. The program even installed with an auto hidden taskbar icon! I didn’t have to go in and fix it manually.
Several other companies can take a lead from Microsoft on that one.
Cheers,
M.
