On my Windows 7 machine

Here is what’s on my Windows 7 machine. What’s on yours? What am I missing in my configuration? Please comment or cross post.

I’ve been playing on a Windows 7 Beta x64 since immediately after it was released. It works Great – except for a very few minor things like my 3G connection. Therefore I decided to re-install a x86 version of the same OS and while at it I decided to log what I installed. Just for kicks. Makes for a pretty good blog post too I think?

So without further ado here it is – (almost) all stuff I have installed on my dev machine!

Basics:

  • Nod 32 – The antivirus of choice for Dotway and Waygroup where I work.
  • CrashPlan PRO for backups to my company
  • Fire Fox - I always save my profile so I may just reinstall my addons by xcopy.
  • Gadgets - I don’t use many; just trashcan and some other trivial ones.
  • Zoomit – One of those GREAT Sysinternals sorry Microsoft tools. As a start up tool? What can I say I’m a presenter! ;~)
  • Virtual Clone Drive – The BEST virtual DVD player
  • WinRAR – Great zip file manager with good context menus in Windows Explorer that I use frequently.
  • Notepad2 – just a few added Notepad features
  • FoxitReader30 – Great free PDF reader that allows me to skip that massive Adobe Reader that always wants to update itself and such.
  • Paint.NET – All I need to edit pictures. I’m not an AD so I really don’t need any Photoshop.
  • Microsoft Web Platform - Some Popular Web Apps, .NET Framework, IIS and Extensions, SQL Server, Visual Web Developer and some Extra and Goodies
  • Windows Live -  Messenger, Mail, Writer, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker beta and Microsoft Silverlight
  • Microsoft File Transfer Manager – Used to download files from msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions
  • Office 2007 – I don’t install Access and try to avoid Info Path.
  • SaveAsPDFandXPS – Save pdfs and xps’ from Office.
  • Google Gears – I like the offline calendar and mail functions. Now if they’d only improve the offline reader function to be automatic!

RIA stuff:

I use these all the time. Silverlight is installed with Web Platform above!

Media:

  • VLC – Video Lan Client. I’ve not yet seen a smaller or better video player that OOTB has a LOT of codex and just… works!
  • Combined-Community-Codec-Pack – really good set of codex’s for more exotic needs. The Media Player Classic is another part of this distribution which is another great video player that also just… works!
  • Spotify – Great streaming music player.
  • Windows Media Player Fire Fox plug in
  • Winamp – For nostalgic reasons I always tend to install this one. It is not all that great and it has a heavy load of added crap like search providers and toolbars and shit that you just have to skip installing!
  • iTunes – I sooo wish I could be without this crappy program! It really blows usagewize and I cannot understand why Apple insists on breaking UX conventions on Windows. Do they think it’s funny? And why does some programs install themselves with such a great sense of self importance that they think adding a lot of startup agents and everything else is completely natural? I’m a dev and I use my machine to the MAX and I hate it when I have to go into settings in my installed programs and specifically say; no I do not want you to launch at startup. Leave me alone and let me activate all fuzzy startup/agent behavior I say! At the very least offer installation options to deactivate this annoying behavior!

Communications:

  • TweetDeck – I know there’s a bunch of Twitter clients out there but I kind of like this one. I can save searches on things that matter to me. I have one active search on Oredev. Btw my Twitter id is noopman – talk to you soon!
  • Skype – Absolutely super online telephone. I use it at home as well.
  • GoogleTalk

Development:

Well… that’s pretty much it I think. I’m sure I forgot to note some things but this is a good portion of ‘my stuff’.

Again, I showed you mine now you show me yours! What am I missing in my configuration? Please comment or cross post.

Cheers,

M.

Ohh I agree that's a good one. I've used it at times but some times it does not make it in. There is the issue of having too many add ons in the Studio and that sort of sucks in perf!

You didn't go into detail of your FF plugins but I can strongly recommend Xmarks. It will store your bookmarks online and sync, so if you use 2 diffrent computer they will update. Add a new bookmark at work to check later on your home computer etc. Also stores passwords if you like with a PIN code. Great after a reinstall :)
