Getting a safe temp catalog to use in your program

How to create a temp catalog in a good way where user access permissions are concerned. Update note: I was focusing on Environment variables when I wrote this post and forgot about the other way to skin a cat (and I’m sure there are even more than two ways): using the static method on the System.IO.Path class. So now there is more than one way to do it below. Ever tried to create a temp catalog from your program like so: string temporaryDirectoryPath = Path.Combine(AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory, Guid.NewGuid().ToString("N")); Well… or something similar. Get the current dir that you are executing...

What to do if computers didn't exists?

OK Fredrik first off, scary thought! I’ve said it in other contexts; I think I’d be an actor! Stage school is where I’d get my education if suddenly the world would run out of Silicone. This would satisfy my extravert tendencies. ;~) What abut you? What would You do if computers didn’t exist? Cheers, M.

Øredev YouTube video – fun stuff (Oredev)

Mark and Marc from DPE UK presented at Øredev and also took the time to make this fun YouTube video of the event: Our Trip to Øredev 2008 (If you look closely you see a couple of clips from my apartment – where Elion intros himself and also where Glenn is on the screen.) Thanks you guys that was hilarious! Cheers, Magnus Technorati Tags: oredev,oredev08

More Øredev talk

I wrote a quick post on Øredev a few days ago: Øredev 2008 Aftermath. I was really power drained at the time and jotted down a few thoughts. Two of my colleagues chose a different (better) approach. To rest a few days and gather some info and then write a post on the conference! No I will show my true lazy side and just go: – Yeah! What they said: Linus Roslund: Øredev 2008 Feedback Tobias Fjälling: Recap from Øredev 2008 The event was a major success and we all loved how well it turned out!...

Øredev 2008 aftermath

Oh my, oh my! The Øredev years that have passed have all been great and the cheesy goal you always tend to set for your self is “how can we top this for next year”!? This is not a realistic goal for all years to come but our event is still growing and shaping itself in style, quality and size so we can afford this attitude a while longer. This year the speaker feedback and delegate feedback went completely over the top! It seems our event is very satisfactory and very different than many if not most other events...

Dynamically Generated Code at Øredev co-presented with Anders Hejlsberg

Here is my post of the code, the video by Anders Hejlsberg and the slides. (YES Anders Hejlsberg is doing a demo in the video attached below…) Phew! I’m through the rabbit-hole with my presentation at this year’s Øredev. It was a deep dive into generating code in the run-time. The presentation went very well. This is a very advanced topic to talk about and so I’m very happy with the furious feedback I got. Furious feedback is a system of having one red, one yellow and one green note in piles at the door and a...

DDD Panel at Øredev

Jim Coplien, Eric Evans, Kevlin Henney and Randy Stafford were on a panel about DDD. Here are a few glimpses of what was said. Why do you think design is so hard? Randy: Because software development is fundamentally a social activity. Getting people to agree on what is to be built is the difficult part. Eric: There are so many things you have to be good at: Both people and computer stuff at the same time. Plus you need some experience behind you. And the list could be longer. You need to be reasonably good at all...

From the Øredev speakers dinner (Oredev)

The speakers dinner was exquisite and hosted at probably the best location in Malmo, the City Hall! Very many thanks to the city of Malmo for hosting this dinner for us! Jim Coplien bragged about his mobile phone camera and… well it’s decent but not great. I’m still looking for either the phone with no camera or the phone with a camera that does not require me to have a phone as well. Still looking. Why am I forced to have a camera in my mobile phone that sucks? Another decent picture is that of me...

The Øredev 2008 Conference is here

At long last! I’ve waited so long for this… since last year! I will be documenting Øredev here in my blog. Tonight is the speakers dinner which every year is a very special event. This year, same as last year, Malmo City sponsors the speakers dinner and this year it is hosted in the City Hall! Check out the Øredev Flickr photos here! Man! I am EXITED about this! This event will ROCK! Cheers, M. Technorati Tags: oredev08

Øredev builds Schools in Africa with UNICEF

Øredev builds Schools in Africa with UNICEF Our conference displays a social conscience in the form of funding school building projects in Africa through UNICEF. It is very easy to go into our homepage and "share knowledge" through buying one or more bricks (or company sponsorships)! I am not always, perhaps even rarely, a causey person. But since I am very involved in Øredev I thought this would be a nice opportunity to do a little something… Ask Your company to join in! You can see the info on Swedish UNISEFs homepage under...

FlagsAttribute how to use it right

I like flags. Rarely do I get a chance to use them. Today the perfect opportunity came up and I recalled the "good way" of dealing with flags that I had found last time. After some digging I found it and I thought it is worthy of another post in another blog. So no news today just a helpful test class that shows exactly how to define and use an enum with the FlagsAttribute. [TestClass] public class FlagsTests { [Flags] public enum Metasyntactic { Noop...

Silverlight Greeting Creator sample online

It is filed under Home > Community > Gallery > Silverlight 2 Samples > Greeting Generator Go check it out and play with it online, it's really cool! (Or download it from Codeplex and fiddle with it: Greeting Generator on Codeplex!) Cheers M. Technorati Tags: Silverlight,.NET

Summarizing PDC 2008

OMG!! WTF!? Dude, I totally feel like an ignorant moron! (Sorry for the childish and cheesy intro but I have the worst brain overload since PDC05!) Fortunately I’ve had a few days to think about it and now I feel I am slowly landing on my feet again. Here is my summation of PDC 2008! Future looks promising with the cloud and all that surrounds it! I’ve got to say that I can’t wait to build my first live service in the cloud. I already have a service in mind as a demo. However I will have to...

All of the PDC videos live!

All of the sessions are online at Channel 9: http://channel9.msdn.com/pdc2008/ Here is a very cool list by Greg Duncan: PDC2008 Quick Video Link List (Updated: Now with link verification, MP4/ZIP links and Channel 9 session page links) I’m impressed and even more impressed about all the sessions online and accessible like this!
